BREAKING: DeepSeek Users Face JAILTIME! Senate's INSANE New Bill.
A new bill proposed by U.S. Senator Holly could impose harsh penalties, including up to 20 years in jail and a $1 million fine, for individuals who download AI models from China, such as the DeepSeek model. This legislation comes amid growing concerns over AI competition between the U.S. and China.
The bill targets preventing the export and import of AI tech with China and aims to protect American economic superiority. However, it raises concerns about its impact on open-source AI development and scientific progress. Critics worry it could stifle innovation and collaboration.
Andrej Karpathy released a 3.5-hour video titled "Deep Dive into LLMs like ChatGPT," exploring Large Language Models (LLMs). The video breaks down complex AI concepts, making them accessible to non-experts. While the tech community praised its educational value, opinions were mixed on LLMs' transformative potential. Discussions also highlighted limitations, like their inability to acknowledge ignorance, while emphasizing their value in software development experimentation.
Mistral AI, a French startup backed by Nvidia, launched a new generative AI app called Le Chat, offering responses up to 1,000 words per second. Positioned as a European alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Mistral emphasizes open-source technology and AI accessibility. Despite early success, it remains overshadowed by U.S. competitors. The company has secured several partnerships, including with Veolia and the French jobs agency, and has raised over 1 billion euros. However, Mistral’s CEO downplays immediate IPO plans.
Researchers from Stanford and the University of Washington developed an AI reasoning model called s1 for under $50 in cloud compute credits. The s1 model, distilled from Google’s Gemini 2.0, matches leading models like OpenAI’s o1 in tasks like math and coding. By using a small dataset and supervised fine-tuning, s1 shows that inexpensive approaches can replicate costly AI models. The project highlights how open-source techniques may disrupt traditional AI development models.
Starting this week, Google Photos will integrate SynthID, a technology that embeds an invisible watermark into AI-generated images edited with the Reimagine tool in Magic Editor. This helps users easily identify AI-edited content, like images created using Google’s Imagen model. While small edits may not be marked by SynthID, users can check for the watermark through the "About this image" feature, which also shows metadata. Google aims to enhance transparency around AI edits in photos.
Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, plans to collaborate with Chinese researchers on AI projects following the breakthrough by DeepSeek, which developed a powerful AI model at a fraction of the cost of U.S. rivals. Sberbank’s First Deputy CEO, Alexander Vedyakhin, stated that the bank’s scientists will work alongside Chinese researchers on joint AI research.
🧠RESEARCH
SmolLM2 is a 1.7 billion-parameter language model designed for resource-constrained environments. It outperforms similar models by using a multi-stage training process on 11 trillion tokens, incorporating specialized datasets. The paper introduces FineMath, Stack-Edu, and SmolTalk datasets and releases both the model and datasets for future research.
TwinMarket introduces a multi-agent framework using large language models (LLMs) to simulate socio-economic systems. It models individual behaviors and their collective impact, demonstrating how interactions can lead to emergent phenomena like financial bubbles and recessions. This approach enhances the understanding of human behavior in socio-economic dynamics.
This paper investigates long chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning in large language models (LLMs), focusing on factors that enable its emergence. Key findings include the importance of reinforcement learning (RL), scaling training compute, and reward shaping. The study provides insights on optimizing training strategies for improved CoT reasoning, especially for complex tasks.
