AlphaProteo - Google DeepMind's Breakthru AI for "Protein Design"

Alpha proteo designs proteins that target specific biological functions, such as combating cancer or autoimmune diseases. By creating custom proteins that bind to designated target proteins, they can influence or alter their activity.

This method has vast implications for drug design, vaccine development, and environmental remediation, including engineering enzymes to break down pollutants. The integration of machine learning with life sciences, as mentioned by Nvidia’s Jensen Wong, indicates a shift from traditional discovery to a more engineered approach in life sciences.

Apple’s new iPhone will use Arm’s next-generation chip technology for AI

Apple is set to launch the iPhone 16 featuring a next-generation chip based on Arm's latest V9 chip design, emphasizing its focus on generative artificial intelligence features in smartphones. The adoption of Arm's V9 chip architecture by Apple for the iPhone is significant as it contributes significantly to the company's revenues and underscores the boost for Arm, which has a multiyear licensing deal with Apple.

Arm's chip architecture, V9, launched in 2021, offers improved performance and efficiency, with Apple already utilizing it in their M4 MacBook chips and aiming for enhanced AI capabilities in its devices.

Getty Images drops ‘cleanest’ visual dataset for training foundation models

Getty Images is releasing a sample dataset of images on Hugging Face to support AI/ML development. Unlike other datasets, Getty's is commercial-safe and high-quality, addressing common issues like poor data quality and legal concerns.

The dataset contains 3,750 images across 15 categories, all from Getty's creative library, ensuring they are safe for use without legal risks. It's designed for machine learning, pre-cleaned of unwanted elements like NSFW content, and enriched with detailed metadata.

New AI Model Can Simulate Super Mario Bros. After Watching Gameplay Footage

Researchers have developed a new AI model called MarioVGG that can generate video of Super Mario Bros. gameplay by simulating movements based on input data. Trained on over 737,000 frames of gameplay, the model uses a simplified set of commands to recreate game dynamics.

Although currently slow and limited—producing slightly glitchy and low-resolution videos—MarioVGG demonstrates an ability to learn game physics solely from video data. This includes accurately simulating Mario's interactions with game environments like cliffs and obstacles.

Startup accuses Nvidia and Microsoft of infringing on patents and forming a cartel

Xockets, a Texas-based startup, is suing Nvidia and Microsoft for allegedly infringing on its patented data processing unit (DPU) technology, which accelerates data-intensive workloads for cloud infrastructure. The issue originated from Nvidia's acquisition of Mellanox in 2020, which Xockets claims initially infringed on its patents after a 2015 conference demonstration.

The lawsuit also accuses Microsoft of infringement, as it utilizes Nvidia’s technology. Moreover, Xockets alleges that Nvidia and Microsoft are part of a buying cartel through RPX, aimed at suppressing innovation and controlling prices. Xockets seeks damages and a halt to the alleged patent and antitrust violations.

Roblox is launching a generative AI that builds 3D environments in a snap

Roblox is introducing a generative AI tool that enables creators to quickly develop 3D environments using text prompts. This tool simplifies the creation process on Roblox's platform, allowing users to instantly generate and modify scenes such as transforming a race track into a desert scene.

Aimed at reducing design time and making 3D creation accessible to those with minimal skills, this AI operates by "tokenizing" 3D blocks and predicting their arrangement. While it enhances creative possibilities, human oversight remains crucial for refining and ensuring the quality of game environments.

Elon Musk Claims He Just Activated the World's Most Powerful AI Supercomputer

Elon Musk has launched what he claims is the world's most powerful AI supercomputer, named Colossus, for his startup xAI. Situated in Tennessee, this supercomputer is equipped with 100,000 Nvidia AI chips and plans to double its capacity soon.

Built in a record 122 days, Colossus is designed to enhance Musk's new ventures into AI, starting with Grok, a chatbot known for its unique characteristics. Despite its impressive capabilities and rapid development, the launch has not been without controversy, including complaints from locals about increased smog levels.

🧠RESEARCH

Researchers have developed a new approach for editing real images using generative models without needing extensive tuning. This method maintains the original image's overall structure and specific regions by balancing noise and guidance during the editing process, improving both speed and quality of image editing.

This survey examines the internal workings of Large Language Models (LLMs), focusing on attention heads to understand their reasoning processes. Researchers categorize the roles of attention heads and discuss methods to study them, aiming to enhance model interpretability and reasoning by analyzing these critical components. The study also outlines current limitations and future research directions.

FuzzCoder is a large language model tailored to enhance fuzzing— a technique for finding software vulnerabilities by generating malicious inputs. FuzzCoder improves the traditional method by learning from successful attacks to guide input mutations, showing notable gains in mutation effectiveness and the number of crashes across various file formats.

mPLUG-DocOwl2 is a model that improves the understanding of multi-page documents without needing OCR by compressing high-resolution images into fewer visual tokens. This method enhances processing speed and reduces GPU load, achieving top performance on document understanding tasks and maintaining quality with fewer resources compared to single-image models.

Geometry Image Diffusion (GIMDiffusion) is a novel Text-to-3D model that converts 3D shapes into 2D geometry images, simplifying the generation process. This approach leverages existing Text-to-Image model frameworks for better generalization with less 3D data, enhancing speed and maintaining high-quality generation, making it easier to produce detailed 3D objects with internal structures and separate parts.
