Nvidia has acquired Run.AI, a software company that manages GPU resources for artificial intelligence, for around $700 million. Nvidia will open-source Run.AI’s software, likely to address antitrust concerns and encourage community innovation. Run.AI’s founders welcomed the acquisition, aiming to enhance AI infrastructure and support broader development. This move strengthens Nvidia’s leadership in AI hardware and software, providing greater flexibility and efficiency for companies using GPU resources in their AI projects.

Meta is shifting focus from its unsuccessful metaverse to AI-driven features for Facebook and Instagram. After abandoning celebrity AI chatbots, Meta now plans to introduce AI-generated “users” with profiles that can create and share content. Aimed at engaging younger audiences, this move faces skepticism about its appeal and the broader implications of AI in social interactions. Despite challenges, Meta continues to expand its AI capabilities, seeking to lead in the evolving social media landscape.

ByteDance, parent of TikTok, plans to invest up to $7 billion in Nvidia AI chips by using data centers outside mainland China. This strategy aims to bypass US export restrictions on advanced AI hardware. Co-founder Zhang Yiming is negotiating with data centers in Southeast Asia and beyond to access Nvidia’s new Blackwell chips. Despite potential new US regulations targeting cloud services and chip sales, ByteDance remains determined to lead in AI investments, outpacing other Chinese tech firms.

Hugging Face launched "smolagents," a lightweight open-source library that allows developers to create AI agents with minimal coding. The framework, containing around 1,000 lines of code, features CodeAgent, which enables AI to write Python code directly, cutting steps and AI calls by 30% while improving performance. Smolagents supports various language models and includes security options like secure interpreters and sandboxed environments. The project is available on GitHub.

OpenAI missed its 2025 deadline to launch Media Manager, a tool meant to let creators opt out of having their work used for AI training. Announced to address copyright concerns and reduce legal risks, the tool remains unfinished. This delay worsens tensions as OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits from artists and creators claiming unauthorized use of their work. Existing opt-out methods are seen as inadequate, and experts doubt Media Manager will effectively resolve the ongoing legal and ethical issues.
