OpenAI is in early talks with California regulators to change its legal status from a non-profit to a for-profit company, a move that could affect its $157 billion valuation. Discussions with the California attorney general's office are focused on how this shift might impact OpenAI's intellectual property, including its widely used ChatGPT app.

Regulatory scrutiny is expected, especially regarding how OpenAI values its assets in this transition. This change could allow OpenAI to pursue new financial opportunities but may also bring complex legal challenges as it redefines its business model.

Caitlin Kalinowski, formerly leading Meta's augmented reality (AR) glasses project, has joined OpenAI to spearhead robotics and consumer hardware. Known for her work on Meta’s AR prototype Orion and previous experience designing MacBooks at Apple, Kalinowski aims to bring AI into real-world applications.

Her new role may involve collaboration with Jony Ive, a former Apple designer, who is developing an AI hardware device with OpenAI to create less disruptive computing experiences. This marks OpenAI’s renewed focus on hardware, four years after pausing robotics research to prioritize software. Other companies, including Apple, are already integrating OpenAI’s technology into devices.

Google is establishing an AI-focused data center in Saudi Arabia to advance Arabic language AI models and Saudi-specific applications. The partnership involves the Saudi Public Investment Fund and Aramco, the national oil company, which already uses AI to increase production efficiency.

Although Google previously pledged to reduce its emissions and avoid developing algorithms for fossil fuel extraction, a spokesperson indicated this project aligns with its climate goals. While details on "Saudi-specific applications" remain unclear, the center could likely serve Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas sector, reflecting fossil fuels’ importance in the nation’s economy.

Smallest.ai has launched "Lightning," the world's fastest text-to-speech model, generating up to 10 seconds of audio in just 100 milliseconds. This ultra-fast AI model supports English and Hindi with plans to expand to more languages. Lightning significantly lowers costs for voicebot builders, with rates as low as 0.02 USD per minute, enabling population-scale use cases.

Unlike traditional models that require resource-heavy streaming, Lightning works via a simple REST API, allowing efficient, scalable voicebot deployment. Available on the Waves Speech platform, Lightning supports diverse applications, including voiceovers and audiobooks, and offers additional features like voice cloning in beta.

Jericho Security, a New York-based startup, has secured the Pentagon’s first AI defense contract, valued at $1.8 million through AFWERX. The contract focuses on enhancing the cybersecurity of the U.S. Air Force using generative AI to simulate complex phishing attacks across various platforms, such as emails, texts, and calls.

Jericho’s approach leverages a “predator and prey” model, using real-time data to improve both offensive and defensive security strategies. This contract positions Jericho to expand into government sectors, emphasizing military-grade security and personalized training to address human vulnerabilities, a common cause of cybersecurity breaches.

WEBRL, a system that trains open language models to handle web tasks without expensive proprietary tools. By generating its own training tasks and using smart learning methods, WEBRL greatly improves performance, outperforming models like GPT-4. The framework is open-source and available on GitHub for public use.

GenXD, a system that creates detailed 3D models and dynamic 4D scenes (including motion) by learning from real camera and object movements. They developed a large video dataset, CamVid-30K, to train GenXD, which outperforms previous methods in generating accurate and versatile scenes and videos.

Eurekaverse is a tool that uses large language models to automatically create training environments for robots. By generating increasingly difficult and varied obstacle courses, Eurekaverse helps robots learn complex skills like parkour without needing expert input. This method proved effective in both simulations and real-world tests, outperforming human-designed courses.

AndroidLab is a new system for creating and testing Android software agents. It provides a flexible environment with multiple tasks and simulated devices, supporting different AI models. Using AndroidLab, researchers significantly improved the success rates of several open-source models. The system is freely available on GitHub.

Regional prompting for Diffusion Transformers improves their ability to create images from detailed and complex text descriptions. By adjusting how the model focuses on different parts of the text, this method enhances image accuracy without needing additional training. The implementation is available on GitHub for public use.
