OpenAI and NVIDIA Team Up on a Massive AI Datacenter

Here’s the short take: OpenAI’s new NVIDIA partnership is a gigawatt‑class commitment.

At least 10 GW of NVIDIA systems beginning in 2026.

That implies millions of GPUs over time and is the single largest, clearest compute build now disclosed by any western AI lab.

This means that NVIDIA will invest $100 BILLION into OpenAI. The details aren’t fully finalized yet, but this would mean that NVIDIA is no longer “just selling shovels” to fuel the AGI race. It’s making a big investment into an actual frontier AI lab.

This is about 10x bigger than what xAI has as their Colossus data center in Memphis. The total amount of GPUs that will go online is more than the total amount that NVIDIA has sold in all of 2025.

The scale here is truly staggering and it shows that the labs, the chip manufacturers and other investors will still continue to pour money into AI at extraordinary rates.

I’m wondering where they will build these massive data centers? The amount of electricity could power about 7.5 million homes. They would need about 10 nuclear reactors to meet the energy demands of a 10 GW data center.

Interesting times ahead.
