OpenAI's upcoming AI model, named Orion, may not show a significant improvement over earlier versions like GPT-4. Employees who tested Orion noticed that while it performs better than current models, the advancement isn't as large as previous leaps. In areas such as computer coding, Orion might not be consistently superior.
To address this slowdown, OpenAI has created a new team to find ways to enhance their AI despite having less new data to learn from. They plan to train Orion using data generated by other AI models and focus on improving the model after initial training. OpenAI declined to comment on these reports.
The U.S. government has ordered Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest computer chip maker, to stop sending advanced chips to China starting Monday. These chips are often used in artificial intelligence (AI), where computers perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. The U.S. Department of Commerce restricted exports of chips that are 7 nanometers or more advanced—a nanometer is a tiny unit of length; smaller numbers mean more powerful chips.
This action follows the discovery that one of TSMC's chips was found in a Huawei AI processor, which might have violated export rules. The goal is to prevent Chinese companies from accessing advanced technology that could boost their AI capabilities.
Google has begun rolling out Vids, a new app powered by its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI). Vids helps users create video presentations simply by typing a prompt. The app can automatically add stock video clips, write scripts, and generate voiceovers so you don't have to record your own voice. It's useful for tasks like turning customer support documents into videos, creating training materials, sharing company news, and summarizing meetings.
Vids is available to organizations using Google Workspace, but some features may have limits starting in 2026. While it supports multiple languages, certain AI features are currently only in English.

OpenCoder introduces a powerful, open-access language model for code that rivals top proprietary models. It offers a transparent, reproducible training process, sharing all model data, protocols, and results. By detailing effective data-cleaning and tuning methods, OpenCoder aims to support research and innovation, making high-quality code models accessible to all.
ReCapture introduces a way to create new, cinematic camera angles for any user-provided video, not just AI-generated ones. By refining video frames with a new perspective, it can even imagine unseen parts of the scene. This two-step process uses diffusion models and masked fine-tuning for smooth, realistic results.
BitNet a4.8 introduces 4-bit activations for 1-bit large language models, reducing computational costs while keeping performance high. By combining quantization and sparsification, BitNet a4.8 maintains accuracy and speeds up inference. It activates only 55% of parameters and supports efficient 3-bit memory storage for large-scale deployments.
Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT) introduces a sparse architecture for multi-modal models handling text, images, and speech. By separating parameters by modality and using global self-attention, MoT significantly cuts computational costs while maintaining performance. It achieves baseline results using less processing power, speeding up image and text generation on large-scale systems.
DimensionX introduces a method to create realistic 3D and 4D scenes from a single image using controllable video diffusion. By separating spatial and temporal elements, DimensionX achieves detailed scene manipulation, enabling users to shape both 3D structures and 4D dynamics. This approach enhances video generation, bringing high realism to generated scenes.
