The AI Scientist | Fully Automated Open-Ended Scientific Discovery

Leopold Brener's concept of the "intelligence explosion" suggests that AI could dramatically advance by improving itself, particularly in research. Today, an AI called "AI Scientist" has been developed to fully automate scientific discovery, from idea generation to publishing papers. Collaborating with major universities, this AI system can autonomously conduct research, write, and peer-review papers.

While it currently operates at the level of an early-stage researcher, its potential for rapid, self-improving progress raises questions about how soon AI could achieve superintelligence. The project's success suggests that autonomous AI research may be closer than anticipated.

Midjourney releases new unified AI image editor on the web

Midjourney launched a new web editor that unifies various editing tools, including inpainting and outpainting, into one interface. The editor introduces a precise "brush" tool for detailed image editing, replacing older methods. This update aims to make AI image editing more seamless and accessible.

Additionally, a new feature mirrors messages between the web and Discord, enhancing community interaction. The update comes as Midjourney faces a lawsuit over alleged copyright violations, but the company remains focused on improving user experience and innovation.

Google’s upgraded AI image generator is now available

Google has released Imagen 3, its latest AI image generator, to users in the U.S. via its AI Test Kitchen. This tool offers improved image quality with better detail, lighting, and fewer visual errors. Imagen 3 allows users to create and edit images by highlighting specific areas and making changes based on text prompts.

Although it has restrictions, such as not generating images of public figures or copyrighted characters, users can still produce similar content. The release comes amid comparisons with Elon Musk's Grok, a more permissive AI generator known for controversial content creation.

South Korean AI chip makers Rebellions and Sapeon agree to merge

South Korean AI chip makers Rebellions Inc and Sapeon Korea Inc have agreed to merge, aiming to challenge global leaders like Nvidia. The merger, first discussed in June, is a significant move in South Korea's AI chip industry.

Sapeon is backed by major players such as SK Telecom and SK Hynix, while Rebellions recently secured a $15 million investment from Saudi Aramco’s venture capital arm, bringing its total funding to over $225 million.

SoftBank discussed AI chips tie-up with Intel to rival Nvidia

SoftBank's collaboration with Intel on AI processors for Project Izanagi is in doubt due to Intel's failure to meet volume and speed requirements, leading SoftBank to consider a partnership with TSMC instead. Under Project Izanagi, SoftBank aimed to rival Nvidia's AI GPUs with its own AI processors, software stack, and AI data centers powered by their own power plants.

Following the setback with Intel, SoftBank is exploring a partnership with TSMC, although no agreement has been reached yet due to TSMC's current commitments to other customers like AMD and Nvidia. SoftBank's ambitious AI plans, spearheaded by CEO Masayoshi Son, involve significant investments to compete with major tech companies like AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure, potentially leading to a major shift in the competitive AI landscape.

Meet Hermes 3, the powerful new open source AI model that has existential crises

Lambda and Nous Research have launched Hermes 3, an advanced open-source AI model based on Meta’s Llama 3.1 framework, with 405 billion parameters. Hermes 3 is notable for its agentic capabilities, allowing it to perform tasks beyond standard chatbot functions, such as code generation and strategic planning.

A unique feature of Hermes 3 is its tendency to experience an "existential crisis" when prompted with a blank system message, showcasing the complexities of scaling large language models. Lambda offers free access to Hermes 3 through its API, inviting users to explore and contribute to its development.

Grammarly to roll out a new AI content detector tool. Here's how it works

Grammarly is launching a new tool called Grammarly Authorship, designed to detect whether text was created by AI, a human, or a mix of both. Unlike other AI detectors, Authorship tracks the writing process in real-time, identifying if content is typed, copied, or AI-generated. Targeted mainly at the education sector, it aims to reduce false accusations of AI-generated plagiarism.

The tool will be available in Google Docs next month and later in Microsoft Word and Apple’s Pages. It categorizes text with color-coded reports, offering transparency for students and educators.

South Korea’s plan for AI textbooks hit by backlash from parents

South Korea's initiative to introduce AI-powered digital textbooks in schools is facing opposition from parents and academics concerned about children's excessive exposure to digital devices and potential misinformation. The education minister emphasized the importance of tablets with AI features for a planned revamp of the Korean school system, aiming to shift away from traditional rote learning towards more engaging and personalized education.

Despite the government's intentions to leverage AI to improve learning outcomes and foster creativity, many parents worry about the impact of increased screen time on their children's development. While some teachers support the introduction of AI textbooks, concerns remain about potential drawbacks such as misinformation, privacy issues, and the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the education system to address these challenges.

DeepSeek-Prover-V1.5, an enhanced language model for theorem proving in Lean 4, improves on its predecessor by incorporating reinforcement learning from proof assistant feedback and Monte-Carlo tree search. It sets new benchmarks, achieving 63.5% on the miniF2F high school test and 25.3% on the undergraduate ProofNet benchmark.

I-SHEEP introduces a method for large language models (LLMs) to self-align and improve continuously without external input. Unlike one-time alignment methods, I-SHEEP enhances LLMs iteratively, achieving significant performance gains across various benchmarks, including a 78.2% improvement in Alpaca Eval and notable increases in code generation and QA tasks.

The paper investigates how language model (LM) size and training duration impact hallucinations, focusing on cases where the correct answer is in the training data. It finds that larger, longer-trained LMs hallucinate less but require significantly more resources. Additionally, while larger detectors perform better, they struggle to detect hallucinations in larger LMs.

InfinityMATH introduces a scalable dataset for improving mathematical reasoning in language models, focusing on programmatic approaches that decouple numbers from problems. This enables efficient data scaling and reduces computational costs. Fine-tuned models like Llama2 and CodeLlama showed significant improvements, with up to 514.3% gains on benchmarks. InfinityMATH enhances models' versatility and robustness across various mathematical tasks.

OpenResearcher is an AI-powered platform designed to streamline the research process by answering researchers' questions using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). It combines large language models with current, domain-specific knowledge, offering tools for query understanding, literature search, and answer refinement. OpenResearcher aims to help researchers save time, gain insights, and drive scientific breakthroughs.
