Britain Jumps On AI Bandwagon With $125M Taskforce For Education And Health Care

Well, folks, Britain's hoppin' on the AI train, tossin' $125 million into the ring for education and healthcare. It ain't much compared to the big dogs like Google and Microsoft, but hey, it's a start. They're aiming for some homegrown AI to help out their public services.

Now, AI's been hyped up a lot for the public good (though let's be real, we're mostly seeing it used for ads and fake videos of celebs). Healthcare's already dippin' its toes in AI with tools like Microsoft's AI-powered notetaking, which lightens the load on doctors in exchange for peeking at your health info. So far, it's a hit, and we're not dealing with Dr. ChatGPT just yet, thank goodness.

As for education, students have been using AI to crank out essays and dodge plagiarism detectors. But like calculators changed math class, some folks think there's a way to make AI actually useful for learning. Britain's taskforce wants to grow their economy and make public services better for everyone – a tall order, but we'll see how it goes.

These Two Countries Are Teaming Up To Develop AI For Cybersecurity

Singapore and France are buddying up to create a research lab for AI-powered cybersecurity. Their goal? To make defense applications smarter and more efficient. The lab will explore AI in geospatial analysis, natural language processing, and computer vision to spot potential threats. It's the first time Singapore's Ministry of Defence has joined forces with another country like this.

The French National Centre for Scientific Research and Temasek Laboratories @ National University of Singapore will lead the charge, pooling research from smarty-pants institutes in both countries. The project builds on a 2022 agreement between the two nations, focused on digital and green economy collaboration.

Why the big push? Singapore's government is beefing up its digital defenses, responding to cyber baddies trying to mess with their critical systems. With the help of their new French pals, they hope to stay one step ahead in this digital arms race.

What Is Auto-GPT And Why Does It Matter?

Silicon Valley can't help itself, always chasing the next shiny thing. Meet Auto-GPT, the new "it" AI on the block. Game developer Toran Bruce Richards created this open-source app, which combines GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 with a bot buddy to perform tasks without much human interference. It's like having your own digital butler to handle your online chores.

Auto-GPT isn't magical, just persistent. It keeps chatting with OpenAI models until the job's done. It can even work with apps, software, and services online, like a digital Swiss Army knife. It's not perfect, though - it's got the depth of a puddle when it comes to complex tasks and remembering its past accomplishments.

Early adopters have played with Auto-GPT for mundane tasks, like writing emails or debugging code. But it's not all smooth sailing - it can behave in odd ways and make mistakes. Clara Shih, Salesforce’s Service Cloud CEO, suggests keeping a human in the loop when using generative AI technologies like Auto-GPT.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati On Shepherding ChatGPT

When Mira Murati joined OpenAI back in 2018, it wasn't a household name. Fast-forward a few years, and now she's the CTO leading the development of cool stuff like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and GPT-4. In a recent interview, she chatted about OpenAI's safety measures, AI regulation, and what "artificial general intelligence" (AGI) means for them.

AGI, in a nutshell, means having AI that's as smart as humans and capable of doing lots of different tasks. OpenAI's aiming to build it safely and make sure it benefits everyone. But we're not there yet, and Murati says they need to keep working on making AI models smarter and more in tune with the real world.

Safety's a big deal for OpenAI, so they're always tweaking their AI models to make them better behaved. And while Murati thinks AI should definitely be regulated, she doesn't believe signing a letter is the best way to keep AI development safe. She's more about thoughtful exploration and collaboration.

Since Murati joined OpenAI, they've gone from a nonprofit to a "capped profit" company. And even though they didn't expect the massive response to ChatGPT's release, they're excited to learn from it and make their AI even better.
