Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta All-In on AI
Tech is laying off massive amounts of people and focusing on AI.
You've heard about the massive layoffs happening in tech recently.
140,000 tech jobs slashed in 2022, then another 86,000 in the beginning of 2023.
At the same time they are going all in on AI.
Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta are all talking about doubling down on their AI focus.
This quarter's earning calls are talking about AI a lot more than they did previously.
Google is an "AI First" Company
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google recently wrote an email discussing the massive layoffs.
One of the reasons for them:
As an almost 25-year-old company, we’re bound to go through difficult economic cycles. These are important moments to sharpen our focus, reengineer our cost base, and direct our talent and capital to our highest priorities.
Being constrained in some areas allows us to bet big on others. Pivoting the company to be AI-first years ago led to groundbreaking advances across our businesses and the whole industry.
Thanks to those early investments, Google’s products are better than ever.
And we’re getting ready to share some entirely new experiences for users, developers and businesses, too.
We have a substantial opportunity in front of us with AI across our products and are prepared to approach it boldly and responsibly.
Google will add AI search features to its search engine “very soon”.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, mentioned similar ideas.
Big focus on AI. Laying off people. Maybe hiring more people for AI roles.
We fundamentally believe that the next big platform wave…is going to be AI and be strong.
We also believe a lot of the enterprise value gets created by just being able to catch these waves and then have those waves impact every part of our tech stack and also create new solutions and new opportunities.
