Bard, AI Biotech breakthrough and our jobs

AI is making progress in biotech, Google launches it's own ChatGPT and more.

Bard is Google’s answer to ChatGPT and will likely be able to do a lot of the same things, we have yet to see if it’s “better” than OpenAI’s ChatGPT or not.

(update: Verge thinks it's not)

It will take you 5 seconds to sign up (if you have a google account already), it’s free and if it’s going to be anywhere near in-demand as ChatGPT is, the earlier you sign up the better.

In today's letter:

● Google opens the waiting list for Bard, it’s answer to ChatGPT (above)

● Apple is quietly testing AI natural language feature in Siri. (Codenamed “Bobcat”)

● AlphaFold keeps making breakthroughs in biotech (when immortality?)

● We expected AI to replace manual labor, but it’s rapidly replacing higher wage jobs instead

A MESSAGE FROM UPSIDE

Upside asset

Don’t cut back, get cash back

The cost of eggs has risen 190.9% since 2020. And with costs continuing to rise, we’re all trying to figure out where we can cut back a little bit.

That’s where Upside comes in. It’s a free app that gets you cash back on everyday items, like groceries, gas, and at restaurants. You get to go about your normal business while Upside earns a little bit of cash back here and there along the way.

Upside users earn 3x more cash back than other apps and rewards programs. On average, frequent users earn $340 a year.

Get an extra 25¢/gal cash back on your first tank of gas. Download the free Upside app and use code: “BHTech25”.

Apple testing new Siri natural language generating features starting with latest tvOS update

Apple's testing new natural language generation features for Siri, codenamed "Bobcat," starting with the latest tvOS 16.4 beta. Currently, it's only being used for telling jokes and timers on Apple TV, but the code for these features is included on other devices. This technology can improve Siri without developing anything like chatbots. Apple is quietly beta-testing its first foray into AI technology, and there's no timeline for expanding beyond Apple TV. In short, Siri's current template-based system has led to significant engineering challenges, but this new technology could improve the assistant.

AlphaFold accelerates artificial intelligence powered drug discovery: efficient discovery of a novel CDK20 small molecule inhibitor

AI is changing drug discovery and development, with the AlphaFold computer program predicting protein structures for the human genome in 2020. This breakthrough has contributed significantly to structure-based drug design, especially for targets with limited structural information. Researchers successfully used AlphaFold in their AI-powered drug discovery engines, PandaOmics and Chemistry42, to identify a small molecule hit compound for a novel target. They synthesized and tested selected molecules in biological assays, leading to the discovery of a more potent hit molecule, ISM042-2-048, with selective anti-proliferation activity in a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line. This work is the first to apply AlphaFold to the hit identification process in drug discovery

GPTs are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Large Language Models

This study examines the potential impact of language models like GPTs on jobs and industries in the US economy. They found that most jobs are exposed to GPTs, with higher-wage jobs having more exposure. About 19% of jobs have at least 50% of their tasks exposed to GPTs. While GPTs can make labor more efficient, other factors like social and economic ones can influence productivity outcomes. As GPTs continue to evolve, they will pose challenges for policymakers in predicting and regulating their trajectory. Further research is necessary to understand the broader implications of GPT advancements. By understanding the capabilities and potential effects of GPTs on the workforce, policymakers can make more informed decisions in navigating AI's role in shaping the future of work. In short, robots may steal our jobs, but it's up to us to figure out how to deal with it.
