Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of Google DeepMind won half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their AI tool AlphaFold, which accurately predicts protein structures. This breakthrough has transformed research by speeding up protein folding predictions, aiding drug development, and advancing our understanding of biology.

David Baker, who won the other half, developed tools like Rosetta and ProteinMPNN to design new proteins. These advancements have potential to improve vaccines, fight diseases like cancer, and create new materials, marking AI's growing role in scientific discovery. The prize is worth $1 million.

Hugging Face has released Gradio 5, an update to its popular tool for creating AI-powered web apps. Gradio 5 simplifies development by allowing machine learning developers to build secure, scalable apps with just a few lines of Python. The new version emphasizes enterprise-grade security, with an independent audit conducted by Trail of Bits.

A key feature is the AI Playground, enabling developers to generate apps using natural language prompts. With over 470,000 applications already created on Gradio, this update is poised to accelerate AI adoption in businesses, making development more accessible and efficient.

Groq has launched Whisper Large v3 Turbo on GroqCloud, a faster and cost-effective version of OpenAI's Whisper model for multilingual speech recognition. Whisper Large v3 Turbo balances the speed and accuracy of Whisper Large v3 and Distil-Whisper, offering a 216x real-time speed factor with a ~1% lower Word Error Rate than Distil-Whisper.

It is ideal for real-time applications like customer service chatbots, transcription systems, and voice-controlled devices. Available at $0.04 per hour, it provides a scalable solution for developers and enterprises needing rapid, accurate transcription in multiple languages.

Meta AI is expanding its global presence, now available in 21 new locations, including the UK, Brazil, and parts of Latin America and Asia. The AI assistant supports additional languages like Tagalog, Arabic, Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese, making it accessible to more users. Meta AI introduces creative tools for generating personalized images, including the "Imagine me" feature, allowing users to visualize themselves in various scenarios.

Additionally, it enhances coding and math capabilities with its advanced open-source model, Llama 405B. The AI is also rolling out on Ray-Ban smart glasses and will soon be integrated into Meta Quest for hands-free use.

Zoom is introducing AI avatars that can deliver messages for you, allowing users to create a digital version of themselves by recording an initial video. These avatars can then send personalized video updates via Zoom's Clips feature. Zoom emphasizes security with watermarking and authentication to prevent misuse.

The AI avatars, available early next year with a $12 per month add-on, aim to make meetings more efficient. Zoom’s CEO envisions future AI advancements where digital twins handle meetings and emails, enabling users to multitask. The add-on will also integrate with productivity apps like Zendesk and Asana.

OpenAI is expanding globally with new offices in Singapore, Paris, Brussels, and more, alongside existing locations in cities like San Francisco, London, and Tokyo. This move follows OpenAI's $6.6 billion funding round and recent organizational changes. Singapore will serve as a hub for Asia Pacific operations, supporting customers and partners in the region.

OpenAI's partnership with AI Singapore aims to extend its AI technology's reach in Southeast Asia. This expansion highlights OpenAI’s commitment to growing its global presence and supporting a diverse range of users with advanced AI capabilities.

🧠RESEARCH

LongGenBench is a new benchmark for evaluating long-context generation in language models, addressing the gap in current benchmarks that focus only on retrieval. The study reveals significant performance drops in both open-source and API-accessed models when generating long texts, with some models showing less degradation than others.

MathHay is a new benchmark to test large language models (LLMs) for long-context mathematical reasoning, addressing a gap in current evaluations. MathHay requires models to handle both information retrieval and complex calculations. Results show that even top models, like Gemini-1.5-Pro-002, perform poorly, with only 51.26% accuracy.

Grounded-VideoLLM is a Video Large Language Model designed to improve fine-grained temporal understanding in videos. Unlike current models, which struggle with precise moment tracking, Grounded-VideoLLM incorporates enhanced temporal modeling and timestamp representation. Through multi-stage training and a specialized dataset, the model excels in tasks like temporal sentence grounding and video question answering, showcasing its advanced video comprehension abilities.

Differential Transformer (Diff Transformer) is an advanced model designed to reduce irrelevant context by amplifying attention to relevant parts while canceling noise through a unique attention mechanism. This approach improves tasks like long-context modeling, information retrieval, and reduces hallucinations. Diff Transformer demonstrates better performance and robustness compared to standard Transformers, particularly in question answering, text summarization, and in-context learning.

ControlAR, a new framework for controllable image generation using autoregressive (AR) models. It enhances AR models by integrating spatial controls like edges and depth maps, enabling more precise image generation. ControlAR uses a conditional decoding method, improving control efficiency and outperforming previous models like ControlNet. This approach also supports arbitrary-resolution images, offering superior performance in controllable image generation.
