Today:

AI-Powered Speaker Is A Chatbot You Can Actually Chat With

A DIY project has turned an AI-powered chatbot into a standalone voice-operated ChatGPT client that you can actually sit next to and have a conversation with. The system, built by Hoani Bryson, uses a Raspberry Pi, a Teensy, a two-line LCD, a big red button, and a USB speaker. When you press the button, the Pi listens to your speech, converts it to text using the OpenAI voice transcription feature, sends the resulting text to ChatGPT through its API, and then turns its response into sound using the eSpeak speech synthesizer. All code, mostly written in Go, is freely available on Bryson's GitHub page, allowing anyone with basic electronic skills to build their own AI companion.

ChatGPT's 'Accomplishment Engine' Is Beating Google's Search Engine

New AI features in search engines such as Bing and You.com are rapidly changing consumer expectations and reshaping the search landscape. According to AI ethicist and You.com CEO Richard Socher, incorporating AI and chat in search has the potential to transform search engines into "accomplishment engines," helping users complete tasks more efficiently and avoid low-quality content or ads. Socher believes that by harnessing generative AI, search engines can better understand users' intentions and queries, providing more relevant and actionable results, which can effectively challenge the dominance of established players like Google and offer users a superior alternative for finding and accessing information online. However, Google's dominance won't be easily toppled as it has built a significant moat around its business, and it's difficult for the company to embrace innovative technologies that might disrupt its core revenue streams.

Meta's Head Of AI Has Some Interesting Beliefs About Dominance And Submission

Yann LeCun, Meta's Head of AI and former chief AI scientist at Facebook, caused controversy with a tweet asserting that humans have hardwired drives for dominance or submission and will not feel threatened by leading machines smarter than them. Some critics responded that this reasoning had been used to justify dehumanizing evils such as slavery and racism. LeCun backtracked and denied that he believed in any "natural hierarchical structure," but his comments have caused concern due to his expertise in a technology that may transform society.

People Are Turning To ChatGPT To Troubleshoot Their Tech Problems

People used to Google for help with their IT problems, but now they prefer to chat with ChatGPT, an AI-generated conversational chatbot, according to a survey of 1,000 people by Electric. 66% of respondents said they went to ChatGPT for IT advice, especially Gen Z, with 83% seeking help from the chatbot. In a separate survey of 200 IT professionals, ChatGPT's responses earned an overall accuracy score of 39 out of 100, but some answers, such as how to make the internet faster, scored as high as 74. So, while it's not perfect, ChatGPT is becoming a popular choice for IT troubleshooting.

A Psychologist Explains How AI and Algorithms Are Changing Our Lives

Psychologist and behavioral scientist, Gerd Gigerenzer, director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam, says that algorithms are changing the world and our behavior in ways we don’t fully understand. In a recent podcast interview, he talked about his latest book, “How to Stay Smart in a Smart World,” which explores how algorithms are shaping our future and why it is important to remember that they are not human. Gigerenzer warns that in order to get the most out of AI, we have to make the world more predictable, and transparency is essential. The problem is that tech companies are selling black-box algorithms that determine parts of our lives, including our social and political behavior, which can lead to the tilt of scales towards autocratic systems. Gigerenzer also says that we need to get control back over our lives, and people should think of themselves as customers, not the product.
