AI Video is getting UNREAL... (and other AI news)

Recent breakthroughs in AI are advancing robotics and video technology. Researchers introduced a two-stage system that improves humanoid robot agility by learning from human motion and real-world adjustments.

Meanwhile, companies unveil projects for smart home robot companions and realistic video animations from single images. Simulation methods for self-driving vehicles also show promising results. These advances broaden possibilities for robotics, video creation, and autonomous driving, paving the way for lifelike technology.

Meta is in talks to acquire South Korean AI chip startup FuriosaAI to strengthen its custom chip efforts amid an Nvidia shortage. Founded in 2017, FuriosaAI recently raised $1.4 million and has developed the RNGD chip, which it claims is three times more efficient than Nvidia’s H100 GPUs. The acquisition could close this month as Meta competes with other buyers. FuriosaAI’s AI chip is set for mass production later this year.

Apple has partnered with Alibaba to develop AI features for iPhone users in China, aiming to counter declining sales amid competition from local brands. The companies have submitted their AI models for regulatory approval. Apple previously tested Baidu’s AI but found it lacking. Alibaba’s AI, trained on consumer behavior data, offers a better fit. The move follows China’s strict AI regulations, and Apple plans to launch a simplified Chinese version in April.

Google has introduced NotebookLM Plus as part of the Google One AI Premium plan, offering higher usage limits and premium features for enhanced research and idea generation. The plan, priced at $19.99/month, includes Gemini Advanced, AI tools in Gmail and Docs, and 2TB storage. To support students, Google is offering a 50% discount ($9.99/month for 12 months) for eligible U.S. students aged 18 and older.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged faster action on AI’s security risks, geopolitical impact, and economic disruption. He warned that by 2026-2027, AI could function like a "country of geniuses in a datacenter," reshaping global power. He stressed democratic leadership in AI, stronger security policies, and economic monitoring. Anthropic introduced its Economic Index to track AI's labor impact and called for government oversight and transparency.

Elon Musk has made a $97.4 billion bid to take control of OpenAI’s nonprofit arm, aiming to block its conversion to a public benefit corporation. His offer, far above OpenAI’s current valuation, could pressure regulators in Delaware and California to intervene, affecting Microsoft's stake. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rejected the bid, but Musk’s move may increase OpenAI’s cost of capital and trigger a bidding war.

🧠RESEARCH

SynthDetoxM, a dataset of 16,000 detoxified sentence pairs in German, French, Spanish, and Russian, generated using nine modern LLMs. Their approach outperforms human-annotated datasets, improving multilingual text detoxification. They provide the dataset and code to advance research in the field.

Researchers examined Test-Time Scaling (TTS) and found that small LLMs can outperform much larger ones when optimized. A 1B LLM surpassed a 405B LLM on MATH-500, proving that compute-efficient strategies improve reasoning. Their findings highlight the importance of tailoring TTS to model types and task difficulty.

OREAL, a reinforcement learning framework that optimizes mathematical reasoning using outcome-based rewards. A 7B model achieved 94.0 pass@1 on MATH-500, matching 32B models. The study highlights the importance of policy models and training queries in RL, offering insights to enhance reasoning abilities in LLMs.

QuEST, a method for training LLMs with 1-bit weights and activations while maintaining stability and accuracy. QuEST improves quantization-aware training (QAT), outperforming FP16 in efficiency. It enhances quantization precision and gradient estimation, enabling smaller, faster, and cost-effective models with stable performance across hardware-supported precisions.

AuraFusion360, a novel method for 360° scene inpainting that improves object removal and hole filling in 3D environments using Gaussian Splatting. It enhances depth-aware occlusion detection, zero-shot depth diffusion, and multi-view consistency. Their 360-USID dataset sets a new benchmark, significantly outperforming existing methods in geometric accuracy and visual quality.
